Ex-special counsel said he followed law in holding president to account in public appearance after cases were dropped

Jack Smith, the former special counsel, defended his decision to seek criminal charges against Donald Trump for his efforts to overturn the 2020 election in his first and perhaps only public appearance on Thursday to discuss the cases after they were dropped last year.

“No one should be above the law in this country, and the law required that he be held to account,” Smith said in his opening remarks before the House judiciary committee. “So that is what I did.”
