Ghana’s Parliament has officially ratified reciprocal visa waiver agreements with four countries: Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe, Colombia, and Dominica. The agreements will allow nationals of these countries and Ghana to travel without a visa for specified purposes and durations.

The waiver covers holders of:

  • Ordinary passports

  • Diplomatic passports

  • Service/official passports

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, the agreements aim to boost bilateral cooperation, enhance trade and tourism, and ease diplomatic travel between Ghana and its international partners.

“These visa waivers are part of a broader effort to improve Ghana’s global relations and encourage greater movement of people for official, business, and cultural purposes,” a ministry spokesperson stated.

🌍 Strategic Partnerships

Each of the four countries brings unique value to Ghana’s foreign policy goals:

  • Colombia, one of Latin America’s leading economies, has increased cooperation with West African states in education and security.

  • Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe, both African Union members, share cultural and maritime interests with Ghana.

  • Dominica, a Caribbean Commonwealth nation, is exploring tourism and port development partnerships.

The agreements are expected to support mutual development, improve regional integration, and pave the way for future visa-free arrangements with additional countries.

📅 Implementation Timeline

While Parliament has ratified the agreements, the actual enforcement will follow administrative coordination between Ghana Immigration Service and the partner countries. This includes:

  • Publishing implementation guidelines

  • Training immigration officers

  • Updating border systems to recognize waiver statuses

Travelers are advised to monitor updates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ghana Immigration Service for effective travel dates and entry conditions.

✈️ What This Means for Travelers

Once implemented:

  • Eligible passport holders from the four nations can enter Ghana without needing a visa for short stays, typically up to 90 days.

  • Ghanaians will enjoy the same privileges when traveling to these countries.

These developments mark another milestone in Ghana’s push for greater diplomatic mobility and international access.
