Ghana has reached a landmark debt relief agreement with France, marking the first official deal with a bilateral creditor under the Paris Club framework. The deal provides Ghana with breathing space on external debt payments as the government pushes ahead with reforms backed by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Under the agreement, France will suspend payments on selected loans and delay interest until a broader restructuring is finalized with all creditors. Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam described the deal as a “vote of confidence in Ghana’s fiscal discipline and economic recovery strategy.”

More deals are expected with other Paris Club members such as Germany, the UK, and Japan, and negotiations are also ongoing with China, Ghana’s largest bilateral creditor.
